For me - Holger - it is an alternative to the acceleration of the world: a space of calm, perception, and inner movement.
It is a magic and perfect symbiosis of analog and digital waveforms.
The Art of the Ever-New in the Ever-Same
Ambient is like a meadow. From a distance, at first glance, everything seems the same — a calm carpet of sound, soft, flowing, and familiar. But the closer you come to the meadow and to the music, and the longer you stay, the clearer it becomes: nothing really repeats itself. Every blade of grass, every small flower is different and moves differently; every note is different; every vibration changes the picture; every second opens up a new nuance. That is precisely where the magic of ambient lies.Ambient music is not a song that demands attention. It is a space that opens up. An atmosphere that connects with the environment and expands the moment. It accompanies rather than pushes. It creates room — for thoughts, for calm, for you.In a world that is constantly accelerating, ambient offers a counterbalance: slowness, depth, awareness. It invites us to breathe, observe, and feel. Not because it dictates something, but because it leaves room. Room for inner movement.Electronic sounds become a new form of nature here. They flow, grow, and change — like light, like water, like wind. Nothing is static. Everything is alive. And yet the music remains a dependable place to which one can always return.Ambient is global. It connects cultures, moods, and times. It is universally understandable because it does not need to be explained. It has an effect. Direct. Immediate. Deep. It can be folkloric, rocky, or jazzy and still fit into no single category.
Every repetition, every minimal change, is a deliberately placed impulse. Not to force attention, but to sharpen perception.
Ambient is meditation in sound. A laboratory for emotions. An experimental space for what happens between the notes.And then comes perhaps the most important idea: Ambient does not lead — Ambient accompanies. Ambient does not provide a finished story, no predetermined journey. It gives you only the map. The paths you take on it are yours. You decide where you travel, how deeply you dive in, what you discover.Ambient is never the same — and yet always familiar. It is music that is not only heard, but experienced. A place that takes shape anew with every listening. A meadow of sound that changes in the wind of your own perception.
Ambient Machine #3 is the first release born from a new creative chapter I began last month in Andalusia. What started as a deeper dive into my lifelong love of synthesis led me into the world of modular sound design — a universe that feels infinite in its possibilities.
Working with VCV Rack 2 opened doors I didn’t expect. Even after years of shaping sound through FM, granular, sample‑based, subtractive, and physical modelling synthesis, modular techniques revealed new layers of understanding. Generative patches in particular fascinated me: evolving systems of clocks, random modulation, sequencers, and quantizers that create music in real time. I call these patches my Machines.Ambient Machine #3 is the first one I’m sharing. It could run forever — this recording captures just 30 minutes of its endless flow.Thank you for listening, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.
The Edge of Held Breath
A slow‑burning, atmospheric drift that feels like standing at the very edge of a held breath — suspended, weightless, and quietly electric. The Edge of Held Breath unfolds entirely through Arturia Pigments 7, its layered timbres shaped by Stepic’s evolving sequences and stretched into cosmic space by Valhalla Supermassive. The result is an ambient piece that moves with a kind of internal gravity: pulses that shimmer rather than strike, harmonics that bloom and dissolve, and textures that feel both intimate and vast. Produced in Bitwig 6 Beta 13, the track leans into fluid modulation and subtle motion, creating a sense of anticipation that never fully resolves, as if the music itself is exhaling in slow motion.
Farewell Summer
This ambient composition is a delicate tapestry of custom-crafted sounds, designed using Pigments, Dune, Lunaris 2, and the evocative tones of Arturia’s Augmented Grand Piano. Arranged and mixed entirely in Bitwig, the track invites listeners into a space where serenity meets curiosity. It’s music for dreaming and unwinding—yet it gently encourages awareness and exploration. Each layer unfolds with intention, offering a meditative experience that rewards both passive listening and active attention.
Autumn Mushrooms is a meditative ambient journey that blossoms from a rich blend of synthesizers and organic textures. The track unfolds gradually, shaped by the granular magic of Falcon 3, which transforms samples into shimmering sonic landscapes. Familiar companions Serum 2 and Pigments 6 return, adding depth and color to the evolving soundscape.
In the second half, three instances of Pigments' brilliant sequencer drive crystalline bell tones through three layers of Serum 2—each routed to the left, center, and right channels. This spatial arrangement creates a luminous, immersive stereo field that invites deep listening.For the first time, a live-recorded handpan joins the ensemble, adding a warm, resonant pulse that bridges the synthetic and the acoustic.The cover photo was taken last weekend during a peaceful walk through a Ruheforst near Osnabrück, capturing the quiet beauty that inspired the track.Enjoy the listen—ideally with headphones 🎧
Waves of Intimity
Immerse yourself in a sonic journey crafted entirely from custom-designed sounds using Pigments, Serum, Lunaris 2, and the expressive textures of the Minifreak. This ambient piece invites you to slow down, breathe deeply, and explore a world of subtle shifts and evolving atmospheres. Perfect for moments of reflection, relaxation, or quiet discovery, the track blends organic warmth with synthetic depth—an invitation to get lost in sound.
Cycle of Life - Out of Phase
Human life unfolds in cycles—like a sine wave rising and falling. When it slips “out of phase,” what seems like a descent may simply be part of the motion toward the next rise. It’s all a matter of perspective.
This track explores that cycle from a human, emotional point of view—especially the recurring tension between war and peace.
Inspired by The Gates of Delirium (Yes, 1974)—itself an interpretation of Tolstoy’s War and Peace—this piece is my attempt, more than 50 years later, to approach a similar idea using modern tools. A subtle reference to the “Soon” motif appears at the beginning and end.
This production is - as all other of my productions - entirely handcrafted: 11 synthesizers across 16 tracks, plus carefully selected samples (including nature and field recordings). All sounds were designed or deeply modified, with expressive control enhanced through MPE.
The composition intentionally avoids strict rhythmic or harmonic rules. While loosely centered around A minor, its emotional core emerges through dissonance. There is no final resolution—because the cycle remains open.
A moment of hope, not eternity.
Just life—sometimes out of phase.
